Imposter companies, claiming to be offshore offices of Air Animal, will attempt to lure you into purchasing pets (puppies, parrots, monkeys, etc) based upon photogrpahs on various web sites.

These African continent based internet predators are based in the following countries: Cameroon, Ivory Coast, Chad, Burundi, Nigeria, etc. Working from internet cafes, the pet purchases start with below market prices. The scams are based upon multiple levels of CASH money transfers via Western Union and MoneyGram. Once you send the money via WU or MG ... your chances for recovery of funds is poor to none.

To easily identify a pet purchase scam; simply do the following: enter the name of the person you are working with in a Google search; along with the country, and the following countries; Cameroon, Nigeria, 419, Ivory Coast, Chad, Burundi; and of course, any unusual names you are not familiar with. The history of the scammers are clearly posted on a variety of web sites.

WRONG ! as our offices are closed on Saturdays and Sundays, you have no way to determine if the puppy you have sent money for is on its way. Canadians continue to be trusting people; sending more per MoneyGram (cash) to Cameroon, for alleged puppies; that never appear than Americans.

Americans were targeted this past week as they are on a regular daily basis as victims of the con & scam artists in the African country of Cameroon and elsewhere..... with fictitious web sites provided the scam victims to allegedly "track" the shipment of the puppies. Of course, after the first transfer of CASH by Western Union and/or MoneyGram, you discover the "tracking web site" do not exist.

Our Briish cousins continue to be targeted as well; the "bait" this past week being African Gray parrots. For those who take the time & effort to read these blogs, you will benefit by knowing of the need for you to obtain a CITES import permit to bring the alleged birds into the UK, with quarantine at your residence; along with veterinary inspection at your residence. A call to your local UK veterinary surgeon will confirm this situation.

Our "down under" friends in Australia continue to take the "bait" from the con and scam artists in Camereoon, and elesewhere. Our Aussie friends would do well to look at the AQIS website ... www.aqis.gov.au .. to familiarize themselves with the imporation of pet dogs, cats, and birds into Australia.

Summary; if you contemplating purchasing and/or acquiring a pet via the internet, you are most likely setting yourselves up to be the victim of a scam from talented and sophisticated con artists in yes, the African country of Cameroon.

If the "deal" seems to good to be true, it is ... there are NO "free" or low cost pets to be purchased over the internet.

The Canadian scam victim's profile : with the free classified advertising available on www.kijiji.ca, a visit to the Canadian communities of Brantford, Thunder Bay, Fort MacMurry, etc is easy. You will observe the major Canadian cities on the kijiji.ca website are marked in bold red ... the smaller communities are not highlighted.

The scammers in the African country of Cameroon .. and other parts of the world, list their puppies, etc for adoption, sale, etc in the smaller communities of Canada, with the alleged and non-existent pet being shipped to you from a distant major Canadian city; a city which you are unable to drive to easily, usually at the other end of Canada.

The bait is set with either a cute, adorable puppy, etc or one at a lower than market price, or a breed not generally available to the Canadian pet owners. The Cameroon scammers bait the Canadian victims with amounts of CAD$400.00, $800.00, $1200.00, etc .. usually in multiples of $400.00.

We spoke to one scam victim in Brantford, who was milked in amounts of CAD$250.00 in multiple MoneyGram transfers via Canada Post.

Summary; if you live in a Canadian province, and not in the major city of the province, and you find a pet for purchase in kijiji's free classified advertising web site, and the pet will be shipped to you from a distant major Canadian city, you are at the beginning of an internet scam.

A picture may be worth a thousand words, yet the scammers in Cameroon, Africa and elsewhere turn that picture into thousands of dollars for internet purchases that were never meant to exist in the first place.

The caller (she) having answered an advertisment in a local newspaper in Connecticut. The "hook" was the low balled price of $240.00 for the Bulldog puppy.

and the caller from Connecticut .. having found an alleged "teacup Yorkie" on a web site for the low balled price of $200.00 ... and, after visiting our Blog on scams, was surprised ... and thankful she had not sent any cash dollars to Cameeroon.

SCAM Report #57 : Brit's love Pug puppies ; two scam attempts; wise Brit's saved 400.00 pounds sterling

we received two (2)reports today as follows : the family in Peterborough was asked to send 180.00 pounds sterling to Cameroon, with a pug puppy to be delivered to them from Scotland; the ground delivery agent was to be Air Animal of Tampa, Florida.

the second of the two reports was as follows : the family in Telford was asked to send 120.00 pounds sterling to Cameroon, with a pug puppy to be delivered tothem from Scotland; the ground delivery agent to be Air Animal of Tampa, Florida.

both families contacted Air Animal in Tampa, Florida/USA prior to sending money; Good Move, Brit's .. you saved yourself from a financial loss; and subsequent heartache.

And, was wondering where the two teacup Chihuahua's were. the puppies were non-existent.

I suggested the caller from Ontario to contact the following parties: the RCMP's internet fraud department, kijiji.ca for allowing free classified ads on their web site as the "lure" for scammers to post their fictitious offerings,and MoneyGram for their participation in internet fraud, as well as CanadaPost for their participation as well.

I urged the caller from New York to contact the Federal Bureau of Investigation's web site .... www.ic3.gov ... to report his loss of $200.00

Monday, 26 January 2009 brought us three reports of attempted scams over the weekend of 23 - 26 January 2009.

SCAM #1 of 3 : the first one was for the purchase of a Maltese puppy for the price of $200.00 from the prospective scam victim in San Diego, California who knew Maltese puppies were generally available for purchase in the amount of $500.00 to $1500.00 .. and could not understand why the price was so low. The "deal" was from New Jersey .. to California .. fortunately .. the San Diego, California buyer did not fall for the low price.

SCAM #2 of 3 : the second one was for the purchase of a "teacup Yorkie puppy" for the price of $200.00 from New Jersey to Washington. The Washington caller could not understand why the US Dollars in the form of a Western Union transfer or the MoneyGram transfer had to go to the African country of Cameroon ... the Washington caller went to Air Animal's website ... www.airanimal.com .... found our Blog on Internet Puppy Scames, Business Identity theft, and realized she was a potential victim.

SCAM #3 of 3 : the third one was from the caller in "Indiana" wanting to know why an intial Western Union payment in the amount of $250.00 was followed by an additional request of $50.00 by Western Union for the internet purchase of a Capuchin Monkey ..to be shipped from the non-existent office of Air Animal in Kansas City to an unspecified airport city in "Indiana" ... the $250.00 was for the alleged transport & shipping of the pet by Air Animal .. with the additional fee of $50.00 for alleged home delivery ...... had to be sent to the African country of Cameroon. The scheduled passenger airlines of the United States and their air cargo services do NOT accept monkeys for shipment; and , there are NO branch offices of Air Animal Pet Movers anyplace in the world.

SUMMARY: with diligence, intelligence, internet saavy, and basic "smarts" ... three potential scam victims in the USA .. in the states of California, Washington, and Indiana were saved a total of USD$700.00 .

Florida puppy to Buffalo, NY : SCAM Report #52

the notice appearing on Facebook .. and the Buffalo, New York caller ... the potential recipient of the alleged puppy available for adoption ... ... . had some questions ... here they are ..... prudent .. and specific .. and thoughful ....

we have not seen Facebook being utilized previously by the scammers in the African country of Cameroon.

Sounds like a reasonable story .. yet .. and there's always a hitch.

Here's the bait ... "it will only cost you $90.00" ... that's the hitch ... .. and that's before the switch.

and the "Florida resident" stated .. " you will give the money to Air Animal at the time of the shipping".

Please Note: Air Animal does not engage in the transportation of puppies where a commercial transaction is taking place between a seller & buyer.

When the Buffalo, NY caller asked the "Florida resident" ... for the name and phone number of the Florida families veterinarian of record to familiarize themselves with the pet's health issues ... ..there was NO answer forthcoming.

When the Buffalo, NY caller asked the "Florida resident" where they lived in Florida .. there was NO answer forthcoming.

The moral of the story ... when it seems to good to be true; it is too good to be true.

The weekend e mails brought many inquiries for legitimate pet moving services; yet one of note was the e mail from the potential scam victim in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia ... wanting to verify the purchase & shipping of yes two (2) English Bulldog puppies from Singapore to Kuala Lumpur, Malayasia .. "with all the papers in order" .. and the "NZ vet needing to do more tests before the pets could go" .

Strange, "with all the papers in order" .. there was the need for "additional veterinary tests" .. and where did the "NZ vet" come into the picture on this deal too good to be true ?

It matters not where you live, nor who you are .. there are multiple web sites .. all offering free classified advertising to the scammers, who simply want to steal your hard earned cash.

If you found two puppies for sale at ridulously low prices in the free classified ads of www.kijiji.com, www.kijiji.ca, or Craigslist.com, or www.livedeal.com ... youi are entering into correspondence most likely with scammers, not only in the African Country of Cameroon, but worldwide.

It matters not if you live in Midland/Odessa, Texas/USA, or Roanoke, Virginia/USA, or Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia .. a scammer is a scammer, a thief is a thief, a crook is a crook, a fraud is a fraud ...

5. the caller is requested to send money either via Western Union or MoneyGram; usually to the African country of Cameroon; yet a payment to the UK is not unusual.
6. the puppy, parrot, kitten, etc will originate from a city not near where you live.
7. you will not be able to speak to the breeder supplying the potential pet purchase.
8. you will not be given the airline flight number of the pet's arrival.
9. you will not be given the eleven (11) digit airline air cargo airwaybill for tracking purposes.
10.you will be pressured by e mail, text messaging, and/or telephone to act quickly, or else you will lose your initial payment and the pet will be sold to someone else who is waiting.
11.the internet scam is usually a three to five step process ... as follows ..
a. a below market price for the pet purchase
b. an additional request for "insurance"
c. an additional request for "unexpected veterinary fees"
d. an additioanl request for "an import permit required at the last moment"
e. an additional request for "unexpected transport costs"
12.the seller of the pet creates a sense of urgency for you to act.
13.various "guilt trips" will be imposed upon you by the seller.
14.you will not be able to connect to any telephone numbers you are given.
15.the pet purchase will come from " the _____________ office of Air Animal".
16.there is only one office of Air Animal .. it is located in Tampa, Florida.
17.the seller does not speak English clearly and does not write in clear concise terms; the messages you receive via e mail or text messaging contain many spelling errors as well as syntax errors.
18. and .. that's what I've learned this week talking to people all over the USA, Canada, and the world.

... in order to move a parrot from one country to another, the exporter is required to obtain a CITES export permit from the originating country, and you as the purchaser/importer are required to obtain a CITES import permit from the agency in your country responsible for the issuing of CITES permits.

.... as all parrots are on the endangered species list .. therefore .. parrots do not move legitimately from one country to another with the appropriate CITES permits.

..... for parrots entering the United States, there is a mandatory 30 day quarantine; requiring both a CITES import permit, along with a permit from the USDA for the entry of the pet.

...... so, when the scammer who has been communicating with you via e mail sharing with you pretty pictures of parrots, you may wish to ask for the seller to scan the CITES export permit from the country of origin and e mait it to you as an attachement ... so that you may apply for the CITES import permit from the Fish & Wildlife Service ...www.fws.gov .. here in the United States.

Smaller aircraft types--the E75, E90, CRJ and CR7, for example, cannot offer adequate comfort during colder winter months. On these aircraft, live animals cannot be accepted between November 1st and March 31st, and/or any other time the temperature is below zero degrees celsius. Furthermore, due to extreme heat, we may not be in a capacity to accommodate animals.

Large and extra-large containers are not accepted on the following aircraft due to size: E75, E90, CRJ and CR7.

Toy-sized dogs, puppies and kittens are not reccommended in the following aircrafts: A319, A320 and A321.

Shipment of females in heat (estrus) is not recommended.

Females with suckling young and weaned puppies younger than 8 weeks old will not be accepted for air transportation.

The task was daunting, as we planned the move of 5 horses, 2 pygmy goats, 5 chickens, 4 dogs, and 3 cats from Calabasas, California to St. Lazare, Quebec last week. The planning took place over a period of two months; involving the team work of three veterinarians in California, our Los Angeles service partner, and our northeast service partners, especially Mersant International for the cross country horse transport by air.

From 12 noon on a Wednesday afternoon to early Saturday morning (3:00 a.m. to be specific)... the 19 pets and animals were moved successfully. We organized the small animals to move first from Wednesday afternoon in California to Newark, NJ by air ... with ground transport from Newark, NJ ... Quebec, with a border crossing at Champlain, NY / Lacolle, Quebec ... with delivery to residence in St Lazare concluding Thursday night.

The five horses moved successfully by air from Los Angeles to Newark, with ground transport from Newark to the Champlain/Lacolle border crossing. The ground transport to St Lazare was concluded at 3:15 a.m. on Saturday morning.

With great thanks to the professionals at the CFIA inspection station at Lacolle, Quebec, and the terrific cooperation of Canadian customs, the move went exceedingly well.

An anecdote: after the chickens were gathered and collected in California, an egg was produced by one of the chickens prior to flight departure. Upon delivery in Quebec, another egg was produced. The relocatees simply stated, "the chickens were not stressed by the cross country and cross border relocation, as eggs were laid in both California and Quebec". And, "thank you for delivering our children to us".

It is remarkable as to scope of the audacity used by the scammers to entice you to wire money to Cameroon based upon photographs of cute puppies. And, that's all it is .. photos of cute puppies.

yesterday's calls regarding "where are my puppies?" were numerous. "I wired the money as instructed (yes, to a total stranger in another country) and we are waiting for our puppies (two Chihuahua's) .. and .. they want me to wire more money for "insurance", the puppies are in Ireland, and we're in Alabama"

yes... the Alabama family were another victim of imposters who copy and paste various parts of Air Animal's website (and, other companies as well) to make it look "real" to you as the unsuspecting buyer of "two puppies".

For the record, Air Animal, Inc. (Air Animal Pet Movers) is the Tampa, Florida based pet moving service for relocating families. We do not move pets where there is a buyer or a seller; and we have only one office.

Anyone posing as a representative of Air Animal with a web site similar to ours is an imposter, and .. If you would share the website of your original contact with us, we will shut down the false website, so that others will not be mislead.

Wiring money to a total stranger in another country on the false promise of you receing puppies, kittens, monkeys, etc is risk many have chosen to take; and heartaches are the only thing you will obtain.

Capuchin Monkeys - the latest pet scam

... we thought we had pretty well covered the Cameroon scammers; yet they are creative and adaptive as well. An Indiana family wanting to purchase a Capuchin monkey took the bait from the scammers in Cameroon, and were asked to wire "additional funds" so that the four month old Capuchin monkey could be released from a "hold" in Seattle, Washington. The scam victim was told they would have to wire the money from Wal-Mart .. using a Wal-Mart Moneygram. So... if you go to Wal-Mart to use their MoneyGram method of payment, be sure to ask the clerk at Wal-Mart the following question ... "Where is this money being wired to" .. and .. "once I wire the money; and should I change my mind; can I get a refund from Wal-Mart if the deal doesn't go through?"

... the other scenario to look at is the following one ... contact both your local and state wildlife organizations to determine if it is legal to keep a monkey as a pet in your home. You will find there are permits to be obtained; both for import purposes and for keeping the monkey as a pet in your residence.

..... we post these Cameroon scams to better inform potential pet owners of the hazards of buying sight unseen live animals; especially from those overseas who want to take your money, and then disappear with the funds. Do not rely upon photographs to warrant your purchase. And, always ask for at minimum three (3) references from satisfied customers before you start sending money to alleged overseas "offices".

a scammed and angry pet owner to be in the UK shared with us the e mail from the alleged "Air Animal office in Laounde, Cameroon" ... a hoax of course ... that if the buyer in the UK did not immediately wire USD$1200.00 to Cameroon, then the two puppies ordered would be destroyed immediately by the French authorities, who had held up the shipment in Paris, pending proof of insurance. The demand for payment was based upon an alleged requirement of the Council of Europe "requiring all pets to be insured whilst in transit" .. another of the many hoaxes used by the Cameroon scammers to promise you two beautiful puppies based upon web site photos; and by the way, nothing else ... in separting you from your hard earned money.

... the moral of the story .. "if it sounds too good to be true; then it is too good to be true"

Puppy scams - Australians Beware !

We recently received an e mail from a professional colleague who shared with us an alleged testimonial from a puppy scammer claiming the following --- a testimonial from a satisfied Australian who purchased puppies who allegedly arrived safely, etc.

What is so outrageous is that AQIS .. the Animal Quarantine Inspection Service does not allow puppies to enter Australia until at least six (6) months of age.

I just wanted to send you the type of email we received using your logo and letterhead. Somebody contacted us via phone asking if the money was sent via moneygram to Africa. We asked him why Africa, the he told us that Air Animal has branches all over the world and its cheaper to work out of Africa. I told him that I will contact Air Animal first when they open to confirm this delivery and then get back to him. Of course, by then he started arguing with me and of course I hung up the phone.

The scam game is the same; two puppies for only transportation costs ...that's the "hook" they use to have you wire money to Cameroon. The Cameroon rogues, scammers, thieves, and bad boys are now targeting potential pet owners in Ireland, the UK, as well as the Scandinavian countries of Norway & Sweden.

Once the "hook" is set with several hundred Euro's ... there are "additional charges" due for veterinary inspection, microchip implantation, and destination service charges. If you have wired funds to an alleged office of Air Animal in Cameroon, cut your losses now and discontinue your communications with the bad boys of Cameroon.

Advice from Air Animal Pet Movers; 'tis simple .. discontinue your conversations with the thieves in Cameroon. From what you have experienced, you have become aware you are yet another internet scam victim.

The emails you have been receiving are part of a scam operation and should be regarded as such. Please do not trust the source of the email you received. These people copy information and logos from our website at www.airanimal.com and other legitimate websites and paste it to their e-mails in order to look legitimate.

Air Animal has only one office located in Tampa, Florida but we have found from previous scam victims that these imposters fabricate office branches in other states and even overseas.

They typically request payments be wired to the individual in Laounde, in Cameroon, a country in Africa. Do not wire any funds to anyone you do not know personally or anyone in another country, especially in Africa. These imposters have unfortunately scammed many people, both nationwide in the USA and globally throughout the world.

Con Artists, phlim phlam artists, imposters, internet scammers,rip-off artists, etc are looking for puppy buyers worldwide with deals too good to be true. Here are some of their “story lines” and deceiving promises and tales …

You have found a classified ad in your local newspaper; or a posting to Craigslist.com, or a web site, etc advertising two puppies; typically Yorkies or English Bulldogs and have responded via email. You rarely have the opportunity to reach the seller/broker by telephone. You have chosen to enter into a lengthy email relationship with what turns out to be an overseas person alledging to be a branch office of Air Animal or other easily recognized animal transport agency or service.

You are told a variety of "stories" .. one for example is as follows ....the owner was forced to move out of the country suddenly (new job) and the puppy is still your waiting for a new home. Do not succumb to the sense of urgency created by the con artist.

In order to expedite the puppies purchase and move, you are asked to wire US dollars to Laounde, in the country of Cameroon, on the African continent. The con artist is working out of an Internet cafe, and not in what we would regard typically as an office. The person you may end up talking to barely speaks English, and when doing so is difficult to understand,

To acquire this puppy, either a Yorkie or Bulldog, at an unheard of low price. You are encouraged to wire money (US Dollars) to a total stranger in another country.

Or , the imposter, con artist, trickster will identify a “middle man” contact (usually a woman) in for example: Tennessee/USA ...to have you send your hard earned dollars to.

You will be asked to send money via Western Union wire transfer or Wal-Mart’s Money Gram transfer no later than a Friday or a Saturday. The scammer imposes an artificial deadline; and becomes angry when you do not comply.

Then you are told additional funds are needed for insurance, veterinary procedures, customs inspections, etc. The imposters, scammers, con men, rip-off artists set the "hook" with a small amount of an early remittance; and then seek to have you wire more money for additional services.

In all classical stings, scams, rip-offs, etc … a sense of urgency is created by the con artist to move you along into the sting. Do not succumb to the urgency!

You are instructed to contact Air Animal.com to finalize receipt of pet over a weekend --- typically on a Saturday or Sunday. Guess what? Air Animal Pet Movers, based in Tampa,Florida has business hours of 8 - 5 .. Monday thru Friday, and is closed on Saturdays and Sundays.

You then discover Air Animal is closed on weekends (i.e. Saturday, Sunday)

By Monday, you contact Air Animal by telephone concerning the delivery of your theoretical puppy purchase, which never existed in the first place. You've been had !

Can't find the microchip ? Replace the battery !

Moving a pet to an EU country requires microchip identification. Yesterday, Wednesday, 13 February 2008, we inserted a ResQ microchip into "Henry" .. a toy poodle, scheduled to fly to Paris, France in May of this year with his family as accompanied cabin baggage.

After successful insertion under the skin in the mid-scapular area .. we scanned the pet to verify the chip ... and, lo and behold .. no evidence of the chip on the ResQ i MAX Black Label Reader --- a reader/scanner manufactred by Bayer.

Fortunately, we had an additional i MAX Black Label reader by DATA MARS SA .. and, yes .. the inserted chip was immediately read and observed.

Summary: if the scanning of a dog or cat for a microchip is not immediately evident ... replace the battery in the reader and try again.

Wooden Boxes - coming October 2008

.. British Airways in a recent press release to the air cargo services industry, and its forwarder agents indicated the implementation in October 2008 of the requirement for the usage of 1/2 inch plywood in the construction of wooden boxes for pet travel.

..comments from the members of various pet travel associations were numerous and often carrying a message of humor ... from England came Nigel Hurst indicating he and his colleagues were heading off to the fitness center to be able by the fall of next year to lift these heavyweight boxes.

.. British Airways came back to say the old fashioned plastic containers would be acceptable for pet transportation.

Flight Kennel Requirements

The Animal Welfare Act, a federal law enforced by the USDA, sets the standards for animal transportation. Your pet must be able to stand up, lie down, sit and turn around in the travel container. Separate food and water cups are required.

A simple test to see if your shipping container is the correct size for your animal is to have the animal stand directly next to the container. If any part of your pet is taller than the shipping container, you need the next larger size.

If you are supplying the shipping container, Air Animal reserves the right to replace and/or modify the shipping container at additional cost, to meet federal standards.
