... and the other family in Atlanta was curious enough to ask why two separate transfer of funds ...the initial request was for USD$180.00 ... and the second request was for USD$484.00 for "insurance" were being requested.
.... the Atlanta family was wise enough to contact us to validate the financial transaction.

I've spoken to a lot of potential pet owners this past week, as the "Internet Fraud Manager" of my company, Air Animal Pet Movers; in an attempt to understand why the internet is utilized to purchase a living creature that will occupy a significant portion of your life; requiring both a financial committment and as well as an emotional committment.
... what I have learned this week is as follows ...
1. this is the first internet purchase by many of the people I have spoken with.
2. the naivety of the purchaser is remarkable.
3. the pressure to purchase over the internet apparently comes from a family member.
4. the caller does not know where Cameroon is located; it is a country in Africa.
5. the caller is requested to send money either via Western Union or MoneyGram; usually to the African country of Cameroon; yet a payment to the UK is not unusual.
6. the puppy, parrot, kitten, etc will originate from a city not near where you live.
7. you will not be able to speak to the breeder supplying the potential pet purchase.
8. you will not be given the airline flight number of the pet's arrival.
9. you will not be given the eleven (11) digit airline air cargo airwaybill for tracking purposes.
10.you will be pressured by e mail, text messaging, and/or telephone to act quickly, or else you will lose your initial payment and the pet will be sold to someone else who is waiting.
11.the internet scam is usually a three to five step process ... as follows ..
a. a below market price for the pet purchase
b. an additional request for "insurance"
c. an additional request for "unexpected veterinary fees"
d. an additioanl request for "an import permit required at the last moment"

... the mystery caller called from a pay phone, asking where his three monkeys were; wondering what airline they were on from Kansas City, Missouri to Toronto, Canada.
... and, he had wired money to a total stranger in another country for three monkeys .. had the gentleman checked with CFIA .. the Canadian Food Inspection Agency, the equivalent of the USDA here in the United States .. he would have found that the importation of monkeys into Canada is severly regulated by CFIA.

... yes .. it's true .. except for those scoundrels, rascals, con men & occassionally women ... all fulfilling the role of outright thieves .. as they attempt to con you out of a few hundred dollars, or a few hundred euros, for their cute "babies" .. photos of puppies' Yorkies, Maltese, Bulldogs, etc .. which they post on many phony & attactive websites ..enticing you to wire money to them for the alleged purchase of these cute critters.
... yes ..it is better to give than receive; except for the fact that you will be giving to a total stranger in another country ... who falsely promises to have a third party ... Pet Air, Air Animal, Worldwide Pet, Starwood, JetPets, Animals Away, Pacific Pet, etc ... send you your alleged and falsely promised puppy purchase.
... get real folks; you can't buy an established breed for several hundred dollars, or several hundred euros in today's global market.

... our front desk reports this past week of numerous potential puppy owners calling us wanting to know why their puppy purchase has not been delivered.
... the sad truth is that your "conversations via e mail" with the alleged office of Air Animal in Yaounde, Cameroon is simply a scam .. and all you may have is a receipt for the wire transfer service .. and the puppy you think you will be receiving is a figment of your imagination at best.
... at this holiday time ..you simply cannot purchase a puppy for several hundred dollars over the internet. what you will become is a victim of internet fraud, where unscupulous overseas operators advertise through the internet.
... fore warned is fore armed. If you are going to purchase a puppy or any pet over the internet, simply ask for the health and vaccination papers in advance of sending money by wire transfer; and even better yet, ask for the names, phone numbers and e mail addresses of at least three (3) satisfied pet owners who have purchased from the alleged dealer/broker.

. our front desk reports increased scam activity in the area of purchasing parrots over the internet .. with the expectation of Air Animal being the pet shipper of choice for the scammers. Nothing could be further from the truth.
.. so .. before you wire your funds to a total stranger in another country, you may wish to take the following step.
... in order to move a parrot from one country to another, the exporter is required to obtain a CITES export permit from the originating country, and you as the purchaser/importer are required to obtain a CITES import permit from the agency in your country responsible for the issuing of CITES permits.
.... as all parrots are on the endangered species list .. therefore .. parrots do not move legitimately from one country to another with the appropriate CITES permits.
..... for parrots entering the United States, there is a mandatory 30 day quarantine; requiring both a CITES import permit, along with a permit from the USDA for the entry of the pet.

Smaller aircraft types--the E75, E90, CRJ and CR7, for example, cannot offer adequate comfort during colder winter months. On these aircraft, live animals cannot be accepted between November 1st and March 31st, and/or any other time the temperature is below zero degrees celsius. Furthermore, due to extreme heat, we may not be in a capacity to accommodate animals.
Large and extra-large containers are not accepted on the following aircraft due to size: E75, E90, CRJ and CR7.
Toy-sized dogs, puppies and kittens are not reccommended in the following aircrafts: A319, A320 and A321.
Shipment of females in heat (estrus) is not recommended.

5 species, 19 pets & animals .. a successful relocation
The task was daunting, as we planned the move of 5 horses, 2 pygmy goats, 5 chickens, 4 dogs, and 3 cats from Calabasas, California to St. Lazare, Quebec last week. The planning took place over a period of two months; involving the team work of three veterinarians in California, our Los Angeles service partner, and our northeast service partners, especially Mersant International for the cross country horse transport by air.
From 12 noon on a Wednesday afternoon to early Saturday morning (3:00 a.m. to be specific)... the 19 pets and animals were moved successfully. We organized the small animals to move first from Wednesday afternoon in California to Newark, NJ by air ... with ground transport from Newark, NJ ... Quebec, with a border crossing at Champlain, NY / Lacolle, Quebec ... with delivery to residence in St Lazare concluding Thursday night.
The five horses moved successfully by air from Los Angeles to Newark, with ground transport from Newark to the Champlain/Lacolle border crossing. The ground transport to St Lazare was concluded at 3:15 a.m. on Saturday morning.
With great thanks to the professionals at the CFIA inspection station at Lacolle, Quebec, and the terrific cooperation of Canadian customs, the move went exceedingly well.
An anecdote: after the chickens were gathered and collected in California, an egg was produced by one of the chickens prior to flight departure. Upon delivery in Quebec, another egg was produced. The relocatees simply stated, "the chickens were not stressed by the cross country and cross border relocation, as eggs were laid in both California and Quebec". And, "thank you for delivering our children to us".

yesterday's calls regarding "where are my puppies?" were numerous. "I wired the money as instructed (yes, to a total stranger in another country) and we are waiting for our puppies (two Chihuahua's) .. and .. they want me to wire more money for "insurance", the puppies are in Ireland, and we're in Alabama"
yes... the Alabama family were another victim of imposters who copy and paste various parts of Air Animal's website (and, other companies as well) to make it look "real" to you as the unsuspecting buyer of "two puppies".
For the record, Air Animal, Inc. (Air Animal Pet Movers) is the Tampa, Florida based pet moving service for relocating families. We do not move pets where there is a buyer or a seller; and we have only one office.
Anyone posing as a representative of Air Animal with a web site similar to ours is an imposter, and .. If you would share the website of your original contact with us, we will shut down the false website, so that others will not be mislead.

Capuchin Monkeys - the latest pet scam
... we thought we had pretty well covered the Cameroon scammers; yet they are creative and adaptive as well. An Indiana family wanting to purchase a Capuchin monkey took the bait from the scammers in Cameroon, and were asked to wire "additional funds" so that the four month old Capuchin monkey could be released from a "hold" in Seattle, Washington. The scam victim was told they would have to wire the money from Wal-Mart .. using a Wal-Mart Moneygram. So... if you go to Wal-Mart to use their MoneyGram method of payment, be sure to ask the clerk at Wal-Mart the following question ... "Where is this money being wired to" .. and .. "once I wire the money; and should I change my mind; can I get a refund from Wal-Mart if the deal doesn't go through?"
... the other scenario to look at is the following one ... contact both your local and state wildlife organizations to determine if it is legal to keep a monkey as a pet in your home. You will find there are permits to be obtained; both for import purposes and for keeping the monkey as a pet in your residence.

Scammers use "insurance" as additional "hook" -- you are about to be stung
a scammed and angry pet owner to be in the UK shared with us the e mail from the alleged "Air Animal office in Laounde, Cameroon" ... a hoax of course ... that if the buyer in the UK did not immediately wire USD$1200.00 to Cameroon, then the two puppies ordered would be destroyed immediately by the French authorities, who had held up the shipment in Paris, pending proof of insurance. The demand for payment was based upon an alleged requirement of the Council of Europe "requiring all pets to be insured whilst in transit" .. another of the many hoaxes used by the Cameroon scammers to promise you two beautiful puppies based upon web site photos; and by the way, nothing else ... in separting you from your hard earned money.
... the moral of the story .. "if it sounds too good to be true; then it is too good to be true"

Puppy scams - Australians Beware !
We recently received an e mail from a professional colleague who shared with us an alleged testimonial from a puppy scammer claiming the following --- a testimonial from a satisfied Australian who purchased puppies who allegedly arrived safely, etc.
What is so outrageous is that AQIS .. the Animal Quarantine Inspection Service does not allow puppies to enter Australia until at least six (6) months of age.
Australians beware ! The Laounde, Cameroon scoundrels, rascals, thieves and scammers will resort to anything to separate you from your money along with a plethora of false promises.

..... reports from our friends down under in New Zealand report the Cameroon scammers and scoundrels are now targeting New Zealanders with puppies for sale .. so .. beware Kiwi's ... for two Yorkies needing homes; for two bulldog puppies requiring transportation costs only; for two Maltese puppies at ridulously low prices. These "2 pet puppy sales" are merely the "hook" for the "sting" to come .... they exist only in photos.

I just wanted to send you the type of email we received using your logo and letterhead. Somebody contacted us via phone asking if the money was sent via moneygram to Africa. We asked him why Africa, the he told us that Air Animal has branches all over the world and its cheaper to work out of Africa. I told him that I will contact Air Animal first when they open to confirm this delivery and then get back to him. Of course, by then he started arguing with me and of course I hung up the phone.

Rabies - Buenos Aires, Argentina .. March-April 2008
... reports from Buenos Aires, Argentina confirms the diagnosis of Rabies in a household pet cat, unvaccinated for Rabies. The cat was observed to have been playing with a bat, and was presumably exposed to the rabid bat. The cat died at a veterinary practice; with post mortem examination revealing rabies virus in the brain tissue.
... all in all, four people, the child who observed the cat playing with the bat, the father of the child, and two veterinary practice personnel, received vaccinations for Rabies as a post exposure measure.

What to do if you are a puppy purchase scam victim.
From what you have experienced, you have become aware you are yet another internet scam victim.
The emails you have been receiving are part of a scam operation and should be regarded as such. Please do not trust the source of the email you received. These people copy information and logos from our website at www.airanimal.com and other legitimate websites and paste it to their e-mails in order to look legitimate.
Air Animal has only one office located in Tampa, Florida but we have found from previous scam victims that these imposters fabricate office branches in other states and even overseas.
They typically request payments be wired to the individual in Laounde, in Cameroon, a country in Africa. Do not wire any funds to anyone you do not know personally or anyone in another country, especially in Africa. These imposters have unfortunately scammed many people, both nationwide in the USA and globally throughout the world.
Please forward the correspondence you have had with these scammers to ...... abuse@FTC.gov.

Con Artists, phlim phlam artists, imposters, internet scammers,rip-off artists, etc are looking for puppy buyers worldwide with deals too good to be true. Here are some of their “story lines” and deceiving promises and tales …
You have found a classified ad in your local newspaper; or a posting to Craigslist.com, or a web site, etc advertising two puppies; typically Yorkies or English Bulldogs and have responded via email. You rarely have the opportunity to reach the seller/broker by telephone. You have chosen to enter into a lengthy email relationship with what turns out to be an overseas person alledging to be a branch office of Air Animal or other easily recognized animal transport agency or service.
You are told a variety of "stories" .. one for example is as follows ....the owner was forced to move out of the country suddenly (new job) and the puppy is still your waiting for a new home. Do not succumb to the sense of urgency created by the con artist.
In order to expedite the puppies purchase and move, you are asked to wire US dollars to Laounde, in the country of Cameroon, on the African continent. The con artist is working out of an Internet cafe, and not in what we would regard typically as an office. The person you may end up talking to barely speaks English, and when doing so is difficult to understand,
To acquire this puppy, either a Yorkie or Bulldog, at an unheard of low price. You are encouraged to wire money (US Dollars) to a total stranger in another country.
Or , the imposter, con artist, trickster will identify a “middle man” contact (usually a woman) in for example: Tennessee/USA ...to have you send your hard earned dollars to.
You will be asked to send money via Western Union wire transfer or Wal-Mart’s Money Gram transfer no later than a Friday or a Saturday. The scammer imposes an artificial deadline; and becomes angry when you do not comply.
Then you are told additional funds are needed for insurance, veterinary procedures, customs inspections, etc. The imposters, scammers, con men, rip-off artists set the "hook" with a small amount of an early remittance; and then seek to have you wire more money for additional services.
In all classical stings, scams, rip-offs, etc … a sense of urgency is created by the con artist to move you along into the sting. Do not succumb to the urgency!
You are instructed to contact Air Animal.com to finalize receipt of pet over a weekend --- typically on a Saturday or Sunday. Guess what? Air Animal Pet Movers, based in Tampa,Florida has business hours of 8 - 5 .. Monday thru Friday, and is closed on Saturdays and Sundays.
You then discover Air Animal is closed on weekends (i.e. Saturday, Sunday)
By Monday, you contact Air Animal by telephone concerning the delivery of your theoretical puppy purchase, which never existed in the first place. You've been had !
Air Animal Pet Movers is NOT engaged in the sale of puppies, kittens, etc nor engaged in the transportation for either buyers, or sellers of any type of livestock; nor any type of pets.

Can't find the microchip ? Replace the battery !
Moving a pet to an EU country requires microchip identification. Yesterday, Wednesday, 13 February 2008, we inserted a ResQ microchip into "Henry" .. a toy poodle, scheduled to fly to Paris, France in May of this year with his family as accompanied cabin baggage.
After successful insertion under the skin in the mid-scapular area .. we scanned the pet to verify the chip ... and, lo and behold .. no evidence of the chip on the ResQ i MAX Black Label Reader --- a reader/scanner manufactred by Bayer.
Fortunately, we had an additional i MAX Black Label reader by DATA MARS SA .. and, yes .. the inserted chip was immediately read and observed.
Summary: if the scanning of a dog or cat for a microchip is not immediately evident ... replace the battery in the reader and try again.
